Feb 2024 Meeting
The Chungcheong branch of the Native English Teacher’s Labor Union held their second meeting on February 18, 2024 at 1:00 at the Minchon Humanities Library in the central city of Cheonan. The Chungcheong branch covers the areas of Chungnam, Chungbuk, Sejong Special City, and Daejeon City. Eight English teachers from around the four regions gathered together with support from the KGLU Seoul staff for a special lecture on the Labor Standards Act of the Republic of Korea in English. Teachers from various public schools and private hagwons discussed the laws surrounding wages, vacation time, breaks, immigration, workplace harassment, discrimination, housing rights, and prevention of human trafficking.
We were honored to be joined by Chang Jun, a member of the Labor Party of Chungcheongnam-do LGBTQ+ Committee. Chang Jun spoke on the worry of the Labor Party in the deteriorating human rights in the Chungnam Province. “Native English teachers can be the biggest supporters of students' human rights by joining the struggle to protect the Human Rights Ordinance. This is because both native English teachers and students are oppressed at school,” Chang Jun said. The Labor Party extended their hand to the Native English Teacher’s Labor Union in Chungcheong to join the Human Rights Association of Civil Society Organizations in South Chungcheong Province as a united effort to join local grassroots organizations to promote human rights, freedom, and social equality in the Chungcheong region.
We were also honored to be joined again by Hwang Hwan-cheol, the former leader of the Cheonan Green-Justice Party. Mr. Hwang spoke of the need for a unionization effort for migrant workers and how the Green-Justice Party can be the Party that raises the concerns of migrant and foreign workers to the South Korean Public.
At the end of the meeting, members discussed action plans for the 2024 calendar year with KGLU Seoul staff.
The next meeting will take place March 17, 2024 at 2:00 PM in the Minchon Library. The theme will be a pizza party.
